Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Gorilla Trekking Adventure

Gorilla trekking is the most popular activity in Volcanoes National Park. The park is home to around 30% of the world’s mountain gorillas, making it one of the best places for gorilla encounters.

Depending on the location of the gorillas, the gorilla trek can last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours and the best part of this experience is the one-hour observation period where you  see these magnificent creatures in their natural habitat.

A limited number of permits—only 80—are issued each day, allowing groups of up to eight trekkers to visit one of the ten habituated gorilla families.  Visitors should book their permits well in advance due to high demand and controlled availability.

Rwanda’s gorilla treks begin early in the morning with a briefing at the park headquarters. Visitors are divided into groups and assigned specific gorilla families to track. Some of the well-known gorilla families in the park include the Susa, Agashya, and Kwitonda groups.

Our Safari Tips:

  • Trekkers need to be physically fit as the terrain can be challenging, requiring hiking through dense bamboo forests and steep slopes. Consider incorporating a good workout routine to keep you in shape a few months before your safari.

  • It’s important to wear proper clothing when going for the gorilla treks—long-sleeved shirts and trousers, sturdy hiking boots, and carrying rain gear due to the park’s unpredictable weather.
