Why Visit Samburu National Reserve ?

Samburu National Reserve is located in Northern Kenya and is a premier game reserve situated on the banks of the Ewaso Ng’iro river. 

 

This vast expanse of remote pristine wilderness measures 165 square kilometers in area and borders the Ewaso Ng’iro River to the south, which separates it from the Buffalo Springs National Reserve.

Wildlife and Attractions

  • Samburu Reserve is a unique wildlife conservation haven famous for an abundance of rare species of animals such as the Grevy Zebra, Somali Ostrich, Reticulated Giraffe, Gerenuk and the Beisa Oryx. 

 

  • The reserve is also home to a population of close to 900 Elephants. Large predators such as the Lion, Leopard and Cheetah are an important attraction (Kamunyak the famous Lioness that adopted a baby Oryx is a resident in the reserve). 

 

  • Samburu is one of the better locations in Kenya to spot leopards. Wild dog sightings are also a common attraction to this unique protected area and Birdlife is abundant with over 450 recorded species.

Activities

  • Guided Game Drives- Morning and afternoon game drives are ideal for spotting the “Samburu Special Five” (Grevy’s zebra, Somali ostrich, reticulated giraffe, gerenuk, and beisa oryx) and other wildlife like elephants, lions, leopards, and wild dogs.

  • Camel Trekking: Enjoy a unique perspective of the reserve and its wildlife with a camelback safari. 
  • Nature Walks: Guided nature walks, typically lasting 2-5 hours, offer a chance to explore the reserve’s diverse flora and fauna, including its 350 bird species. 
  • Hiking: Consider hiking Mount Ololokwe, a sacred mountain with panoramic views of the reserve

Best Time to Visit

The best time to visit Samburu National Reserve is during the dry season, from June to September and January to February. During these months, wildlife viewing is optimal as animals congregate around the Ewaso Ngiro River, making them easier to spot around water sources, making wildlife easier to spot. However, the park offers good wildlife viewing year-round, with each season offering unique experiences.
