Why Visit Queen Elizabeth National Park?

Queen Elizabeth National Park is among the most popular savanna parks in Uganda. 

 

It is the best place to see lions including the Tree Climbing lions and is a great destination for a Uganda Wildlife Safari. 

 

It boasts a great diversity of habitats that include: lakes, savannah grasslands, forests and wetlands that serve as home to the biggest variety of large mammals in the country.

Wildlife Species

  • Queen Elizabeth National Park is renowned for its abundant and diverse wildlife. Key species include lions (including the famous tree-climbing lions of Ishasha), leopards, elephants, and buffaloes, which are part of the “big five” animals. 

 

  • Other notable mammals include chimpanzees, hippos, various antelope species (Ugandan kob, topi, waterbuck), and warthogs. 

 

  • The park also boasts a wide array of birdlife, with over 600 species recorded. Tree-climbing lions are a specialty of the Ishasha Plains, where they can often be found resting in huge fig trees. 

 

  • The rare giant forest hog is commonly seen along the Kazinga Channel, both on game drives and boat trips. Buffalo in Queen Elizabeth NP are often reddish brown due to interbreeding with forest buffalo from the neighboring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). Chimpanzee trekking is available in the steamy tropical forest of Kyambura Gorge.

How to get there

  • Queen Elizabeth National Park is found in the western part of Uganda lying between Lakes Gorge and Albert with the Kazinga Channel crossing through its 700 sq mile land area. 

 

  • The park was named after the Queen of England in 1954 following her visit.  

 

  • The park is located about 389 km from the capital Kampala and can be accessed either by road on a 6h 30 min drive via Masaka Road or by a charter flight.

Best Time to Go

The Dry season that runs from January to February and from June to September is considered the best time to visit with the peak safari time in Uganda being from June to September, while Migratory species arrive in August to December, and March to May offering the best birding time.
